I must not, like the quietists, reduce all religion to a denial of any specific action, despising all other means, since what makes perfection is God's order, and the means he ordains is best for the soul.

About This Quote

In this quote from St. Augustine, he tells us that there are two kinds of religion: despising all other means and reducing all religion to a denial of any specific action. What makes perfection is God's order, and the means he ordains is best for the soul. If you have taken a look at all of the religions in the world, it is clear that they have a great deal of similarities.

They all teach their followers that there is a God who created them and loves them very much. They all have stories about how people were once good but through time managed to earn their way into the bottom of Hell where they will spend eternity without ever being able to see God. In other words, they believe in an afterlife where after death people will be judged based on their actions in life.

These actions will determine whether or not they can even enter heaven or hell depending on how good they were in life. While these ideas are similar, most religions also differ greatly with respect to their views of what is required for salvation. There are also many ways to earn God's favor in the afterlife.

For example, some religions require that people perform certain religious rituals or that they donate money or something else to charity before they receive God's blessing for entering heaven (like Islam). The second kind of religion mentioned by St. Augustine is one that tells people that their actions don't matter at all towards attaining salvation; instead, only God's grace is necessary.

This kind of religion teaches "quietism". Quietism is popular among some Catholics today who believe that Catholics should focus on praying and giving alms to charity rather than focusing on earning merit through good deeds in order to enter heaven when they die.
